Colonoscopy in Dubai: what age to start and when symptoms mean you should not wait
Most international guidelines now recommend starting bowel cancer screening at 45 for people at average risk, lowered from 50. Earlier if you have a family history. And immediately, regardless of age, if you have symptoms.
Why the age came down
Bowel cancer is being diagnosed more often in people in their forties than it was a generation ago. Screening ages were lowered in response. If you are 45 or over and have never been screened, that is the conversation to have at your next check-up, whether or not anything feels wrong.
Screening exists to find polyps before they become anything. A polyp removed during a colonoscopy is a cancer that never happens. That is the whole point of the test, and it is why colonoscopy is both diagnostic and preventive in a way most screening tests are not.
Start earlier if any of these apply
- A parent, sibling or child diagnosed with bowel cancer or advanced polyps, particularly under 60. The usual guidance is to start ten years before their age at diagnosis.
- A known family syndrome such as Lynch syndrome or familial adenomatous polyposis.
- Inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis, of long standing.
- Previous polyps of your own.
Symptoms override age entirely
Screening guidance is for people without symptoms. If you have symptoms, you are not being screened, you are being investigated, and age is irrelevant. See someone if you have rectal bleeding that does not fit a simple pattern, a change in bowel habit lasting more than three weeks, unexplained weight loss, low iron or anaemia, or persistent abdominal pain.
This is where a lot of time gets lost. Bleeding gets attributed to piles, often correctly, and the assumption is never tested. Having haemorrhoids does not protect you from having something else, and both can be present at once. There is more on distinguishing them in this guide on blood in the stool.
What the day actually involves
The preparation is the part people dread, and honestly it is the worst part. You take a bowel-cleansing solution the day before and stay near a toilet. The procedure itself is done under sedation and takes roughly twenty to forty minutes. You will not remember much of it. You need someone to drive you home and you should not work that day.
If polyps are found they are usually removed there and then and sent for analysis. That is a good outcome, not a bad one.
How often to repeat it
A completely normal colonoscopy at average risk usually means ten years before the next one. If polyps were found, the interval shortens depending on how many there were and what the pathology showed. Your report should state the recommended interval; if it does not, ask.
Cost and insurance in the UAE
A colonoscopy done to investigate symptoms is usually straightforward for insurers, because it is diagnostic. Purely preventive screening in someone with no symptoms is treated differently by different plans, and some cover it only from a certain age or not at all. Check before you book rather than after.
