How Long Does Laser Piles Treatment Take on the Day?

Medically reviewed by Dr Kerim Erdem Ulucay, Specialist General & Laparoscopic Surgeon (DHA-licensed) Last reviewed: 29 September 2026

Most people arrange laser treatment for piles with no real picture of how the day itself will run. They imagine a hospital admission, a general anaesthetic, a night on a ward. A day-surgery unit works differently. People search for how long piles surgery takes, what time they will be out, and whether they need to book a week off. If that is what you are trying to plan around, this page is about your problem.

The short answer on timing

The laser part of the procedure is usually 20 to 40 minutes. Grade 2 and grade 3 piles treated with laser hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) tend to sit at the shorter end. More piles, larger piles, or a fissure treated in the same sitting push it longer. The whole visit — arrival, checks, anaesthetic, procedure, recovery — normally runs three to five hours, and you go home the same day.

A walk-through of procedure day

  • Before you arrive: fasting instructions, usually six hours for food and two for clear fluids, plus a small enema at home or on site.
  • Arrival and admission: 30 to 45 minutes for paperwork, consent, observations and changing.
  • Anaesthetic: local anaesthetic with sedation, or a short spinal. Setting it up and letting it work takes 15 to 30 minutes.
  • The procedure: 20 to 40 minutes for most hemorrhoid cases.
  • Recovery bay: one to two hours of observation, something to drink, and confirmation that you can pass urine and walk unaided.
  • Discharge: written aftercare, painkillers, stool softeners and a follow-up date. Someone else drives.

How long does laser pilonidal sinus surgery in Dubai take?

Much the same order of time. Laser pilonidal sinus surgery in Dubai is typically a 20 to 45 minute day-case procedure, and the length and branching of the tract matter more than anything else: a long-standing sinus with several openings takes longer than a single short tract. The reason procedure day looks so similar whether you are having piles, a fistula or a pilonidal sinus treated is that the anaesthetic and the recovery period, not the laser, set the clock.

What actually takes the time

Patients are often surprised that the laser is the quickest part. The hours around it are anaesthetic onset, safety checks and recovery observation, and none of them can usefully be rushed. It is also worth knowing that the examination and the decision-making happen before the day, not on it. At your consultation a laser proctologist in Dubai should examine you, grade the piles, and tell you which technique is planned and why, so that nothing about the procedure is being worked out while you are on the table.

Two things commonly add time on the day. The first is treating more than one condition in the same sitting, which is frequently sensible when piles and a fissure appear together. The second is theatre list timing, since you may not be the first case of the morning.

Downtime and getting back to work

For most desk-based patients, laser piles treatment downtime and return to work means two to four days, sometimes less. Physical or outdoor work usually needs longer. Expect discomfort rather than severe pain for the first few days, some swelling, and bowel movements that feel uncomfortable before they feel normal. Do not drive on the day you have had sedation, and do not book a long-haul flight in the first week without asking first.

When laser is not the right plan

Laser does not suit every case, and an honest clinic will say so. Grade 4 piles with significant prolapse, very large external components, or a previously operated area with scarring may be better served by a different technique, and that judgement belongs to the examination rather than to a website. Anyone offering piles treatment in Dubai who promises one method for every patient is selling rather than advising. There is more on how the technique is chosen on the laser hemorrhoid treatment page.

What to bring, and who to bring

  • Emirates ID and your insurance card, if you are using insurance
  • A list of regular medications, especially blood thinners, which need discussing well in advance
  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • An adult who can take you home, since sedation rules out driving yourself
