Is Laser Piles Treatment Painful? What You Will Feel

Medically reviewed by Dr Kerim Erdem Ulucay, Specialist General & Laparoscopic Surgeon (DHA-licensed) Last reviewed: 30 September 2026

Almost nobody books surgery for piles without asking one question first: how much is this going to hurt? It is a fair question, and it is the single biggest reason people put the appointment off for years while the bleeding and the discomfort quietly get worse. Most people search for whether laser piles treatment is painful, how bad the first bowel movement will be, or how soon they can sit normally again. If that is what you are trying to find out, this page is written for you.

Where the fear comes from

The reputation is not imaginary, and it is not the patient’s fault for believing it. Conventional hemorrhoidectomy cuts away the pile tissue and leaves raw wounds just below the dentate line, in an area densely supplied with pain-sensitive nerve endings. Those wounds are open for weeks, and every bowel movement passes directly over them. Anyone who had that operation, or watched a relative recover from it, remembers it, and that memory is what most people are reacting to when they say they are frightened of piles surgery.

Laser hemorrhoidoplasty is a different operation with a different mechanism. A thin laser fibre is passed into the pile through a puncture roughly the width of a needle, and energy is delivered inside the haemorrhoidal cushion so that it shrinks and its feeding vessels seal. Nothing is excised. There is no open wound at the anal verge to heal over, which is the specific thing that made the older operation so painful.

Is there such a thing as painless piles treatment?

An honest answer is worth more here than a reassuring one. No procedure involving the anal canal can be promised as painless, and a clinic that promises it is advertising rather than advising. What can be described is what most people report: little or nothing during the procedure itself, a dull heaviness or a sense of fullness for the first two or three days, and discomfort that is managed with simple oral painkillers rather than anything stronger. A minority have a sorer first week, usually those treated for larger or more numerous piles, or where a fissure was dealt with at the same time.

What the procedure itself feels like

Nothing, in most cases. The treatment is carried out under sedation with a local anaesthetic block, or a short general anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is not something you experience. The first thing you are aware of is waking in recovery, usually with a feeling of pressure rather than pain.

What does a laser proctologist in Dubai do to keep it comfortable?

Comfort after this operation is planned before it starts, not improvised afterwards. A laser proctologist in Dubai working with laser techniques will usually combine several things: an anaesthetic block placed at the end of the procedure so the first several hours are numb, energy settings matched to the size and grade of each pile rather than one preset for everyone, a stool softener started before you leave rather than after the first difficult bowel movement, and a written analgesia plan so you are not guessing at 2am. Because this is day surgery laser proctology, you are discharged the same day with all of that already in hand.

The first week, realistically

  • Day 0: pressure and heaviness, not sharp pain. Most people are walking the same evening.
  • Days 1–3: the sorest window. A throbbing ache, worse on sitting for long stretches. Oral painkillers and short walks help more than lying still.
  • First bowel movement: usually days 1 to 3, and the moment people dread most. With a softener started early it is generally uncomfortable rather than severe.
  • Days 4–7: a clear downward curve. Many people are back at a desk job within this window.
  • Weeks 2–4: occasional twinges, minor spotting, and a gradual return to gym and heavy lifting once cleared.

Laser proctology recovery time is generally counted in days rather than weeks, which is the practical difference most patients notice. These are typical patterns, not a promise about your case.

When laser is not the honest answer

Most people asking about piles treatment in Dubai want to know whether laser will solve it, and often it will. But it does not suit every case. Very large grade 4 piles that stay prolapsed, significant external components, or bulky skin tags may need excision to give a durable result, and pretending otherwise leads to a second procedure later. Anyone who tells you one technique suits every patient is selling, not advising. Which approach fits is a decision made after an examination, not from a symptom list. You can read how the procedure is performed on the laser treatment for hemorrhoids page.

When discomfort is not normal

  • Pain that is escalating after day three rather than settling
  • Fever, or increasing swelling and redness
  • Inability to pass urine
  • Bleeding that is heavy rather than spotting

None of these are common, but all of them are reasons to be seen rather than to wait.
